Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Find out more about staying healthy while travelling.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

The kids had a great time and learnt a lot about Science, Technology, Engineeting and Mathematics, as well as the career opportunities to students in STEM fields.

Our teachers enjoyed opportunties to hear from and meet and astronaut, authors, NASA employees and were treated to a range of STEM learning experiences and strategies that we hope to bring back and utilise in our classrooms. We also had the opportunity to meet and collaborate with a range of teachers from all over the world.

A massive thanks to the Northrop Grumman organisation who funded the trip and to Mr Johnstone and Ms Thurlow who helped organise this wonderful experience.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

Harmony Week

The last few weeks have been busy for the Wellbeing Team, with Week 8 our biggest of the term, which we turned into Harmony Week. The week included student led seminars and activities, a fitness challenge, various activities during lunch time throughout the week, including Multicultural Lunch and finishing the week with Grade Day.

On the Tuesday of our Harmony Week, we held our annual Multicultural Lunch, where each faculty was tasked with bringing food and drink from an allocated region for the students to try. We were also fortunate enough to have a number of students brining in food and drink from their Country of Origin to share on the day. It was pleasing to see the majority of students in the hall to have a taste of the food, with a number of stalls running out of food before the end of lunch. I would like to thank all the teachers, staff and students who were involved in making the day a success.

We finished Harmony Week off with Grade Day and a disco. Although held earlier than normal this year, students embraced Grade Day with great enthusiasm, team work and some competitiveness. It was great to see all the staff and students getting into the day, dressing up in their Year Group’s theme and doing all they could to win. This year was the one of the closest Grade Day’s we have had, with only 4 points separating first and third, as a result of the cooperation displayed by the students. The students competed in academic games such as numbers and letters, athletic games including mini relays and minute to win it games. In the end Year 10 were victorious on the day.

On Friday the 15th of March, Seven Hills High School participated in the World’s Greatest Shave for the second year in a row. The day started very early with a few of the SRC arriving early to set up the gazebo and to start spray painting the kids hair. At recess, the hair spraying continued with the addition of Jaden McManus, Koby Barlow, Thomas Scott and Gabriel Morley getting their heads shaved. Thanks to Mr Way, Holly Holmes and Ms Jordan for being excellent barbers. Special shout out to Thomas Scott for raising almost 200 dollars which was the most raised out of the students. At lunch time the shaving continued with an auction being held to see who got the right to shave the teacher's heads. In the end we raised $595 for the Leukaemia Foundation to help the fight against blood cancer.

Year 7 Camp

On the 25th – 27th of February 2019, 40 Year 7 students went to the Great Aussie Bush camp in Kincumber. We got to spend quality time with 8 peer support leaders, and three awesome teachers, having a blast of fun.

At the camp we participated in a variety of activities, such as leap of faith, high ropes, mud run, raft building, power fan, giant swing, rock climbing and commando that helped us to create stronger relationships with our peers and realise that we could do anything with just a bit of encouragement. We all tried our best and wore smiles on our faces.

By the end of camp, everyone knew each other and were proud of their own achievements. This wouldn’t have happened without the help of several people. On behalf of Year Seven, we would like to thank Ms Sidorovich, Mrs Howell, Mr Way and also our peer support leaders for taking their time away from their schooling, family and work.

Another thankyou to our office staff, deputy principals and Principal Mr Johnstone for making this possible. It wouldn’t have been successful if it wasn’t for these people.

We spoke with a group of Kindergarten students to find out what they had to say about going against the herd. They had some wise words for us on how we can care, respect and support each other in our schools.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

Blacktown Youth Forum

On the 21st of February, 10 members of the SRC participated in the Blacktown Youth Forum. With other young people in the Blacktown region, we spoke about the many things we face as a whole. Topics such as: Violence in Youth, Mental Illness and Racial and Gender Inequalities, were talked about throughout the day.

In the beginning, we were introduced to many people, whether it was someone who was a part if the council, or the youth ambassadors, everyone had a say in what the future could hold for Blacktown. To put it simply it was a day where kids, just like us, were able to speak and to be heard.

Overall it was a good day and we had many heated discussions. Something to take from the experience that i hope others do as well is, it’s up to our generation to change what the next one should learn. Even if it is a small change it affects how the world sees us, and how in turn, we see the world.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

The Youth off the Streets Sleep Out was held on Friday the 14th of September, to raise money for Father Riley’s Youth off the Street Foundation.

The night started off at 6:30, with students arriving to sleep within the school grounds, experiencing the idea of “sleeping rough”. We began with a few games ran by our Youth Worker Tim, and had an enjoyable time showing our competitive sides.

Following the games, we were fortunate enough to have Mrs Thurlow cook spaghetti bolognaise for dinner, before dancing and singing karaoke. We were also given ice-cream and brownies for dessert, and sat down to watch the movie, School of Rock.

As the night was coming to an end, students and teachers set up the gym mats within the canteen area and began to unwind, well most people anyway.

After a restless sleep, everyone woke up early to eat breakfast and began to pack up. It was interesting to hear the different stories from throughout the night and what the favourite parts were.

A huge thankyou to Mr Way, Mr Burgess and Mrs Thurlow for not only sleeping at the school, but for cooking, providing snacks and highlighting the true meaning of the sleep out. Also, thankyou Tim for the games, Mr Johnstone for the support and all the students who participated. An especially big thank you to Baker's Delight at North Rocks, who supplied the bread for free so our students could eat breakfast and dinner, and put all the money raised towards the Youth Off the Streets Program.

A total of $308 was fundraised and donated to The Youth off the Streets Foundation, great job to all involved.

The competition involved 2 students from 10 different local high schools, competing in a one-minute shootout with the chance to win money for the school and individual. There was a lot of competition and unfortunately, we didn’t place, but a lot of fun was had by the competitors and we managed to collect a lot of free stuff on the night. Congratulations to R-Jae Deacon and William Finau on their involvement in representing our school at this event.

On Monday, the 27th of August, the Student Representative Councils of all 4 collegiate schools gathered at Seven Hills High School for the annual Collegiate SRC Activity Day. The day was organised by the SRC leaders earlier in the term and involved a leadership speech from Collegiate Deputy Principal Mr Dummett, ice breaker activities, an inflatable obstacle course, bubble soccer, carnival games, capture the flag, escape rooms, a trivia competition and a BBQ lunch.

A great time was had by all on the day despite the windy conditions, and the students were able to create relationships that will serve them well as they head into their senior years of high school and develop in their roles as leaders of their respective schools. A massive congratulations and thank you goes out to the leaders who planned and organised the day.

NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) Week is an Australian observance lasting from the first Sunday in July until the following Sunday. NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year’s theme: Because of her, we can! As the theme suggests, NAIDOC Week 2018 honours the sacrifice and selfless contributions which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made - and continue to make on a daily basis throughout our communities, families, rich history and nation.

NAIDOC Week was celebrated by the students of Seven Hills High School during the first week of Term 3 and invovled indigenous games, indigenous art workshops and a special assembly.

As part of our school planning process we are seeking your input into a vision for Seven Hills High School
for the year 2020.

As well as asking you to complete and return the attached survey by Friday 29th August, you are invited
to attend a community forum on Wednesday 3rd September beginning at 5.00pm in the school Library.
discussing with you issues relating to your child's education with a vision towards future improvement.
Topics for discussion will include:
1. School resourcing of the classroom
2. Parents as partners in education
3. Teaching and learning practices
